“Tapestries – Stories of Nature Created in Mosaic” by Kathryn Spooner Bossy
Vernissage: Saturday July 25, 1-4 pm
Galerie Old Chelsea is pleased to welcome Kathryn Spooner Bossy, a mosaic artist whose creations are delightful, joyful and whimsical – a perfect show for this happiest of seasons. Bossy has taken mosaics from a long tradition to a more modern approach, combining a variety of elements such as stained glass, Italian and Mexican smalti, mirrors, tiles, upcycled crockery, stones, jewels, beads, found objects, driftwood and hand painted paper. Every inclusion is meant to purposefully create a unique mosaic tapestry, telling a story of her deep connection to nature.
As Kathryn explains: “Working in mosaic to capture a field of wildflowers set against varied layers of green is an absolute delight! Funnily enough, the warmth and vibrancy of summer in our colourful garden always brings back happy memories of hanging laundry which included the creations of those many quilters and knitters in my family history. I am deeply influenced by them and like to honour their history with mosaic vignettes of laundry on the line - work socks, quilts and blankets telling a story of tradition, hard work and love.”
Kathryn’s mosaics play with the colours of each season. An abundance of reds, burgundy, terracotta, caramel, and darker greens remind us of autumn and sweater weather. The dreamy tones of an evening sunset are the perfect backdrop for the deep rich hues of autumn trees and carpets of moss. Creating a mosaic forest as the sky performs in pinks, purples and navy blue, is an opportunity to capture these layers of magic. The electric colours of spring, endlessly varied as tree buds awaken and the forest stretches to life again. And as days become shorter, shadows are long and colourful on an endless white backdrop.
We encourage you all to visit this delightful show.
