Quand nous étions des Samis : rencontre avec le bédéiste Mats Jonsson
A Special Guest in the Outaouais! Thanks to Prise de parole Publishing, the Maison des arts littéraires is hosting Swedish-born comic book author Mats Jonsson for a fascinating discussion at the new Lucy-Faris Library.
In *When We Were Sami*, Mats Jonsson traces his family history to explore his Sami origins and chart the journey of an Indigenous people largely erased from official Swedish narratives. Both personal and political, his documentary graphic novel blends autobiography, historical inquiry, and social critique. This is the author’s first work to be published in French.
During a discussion moderated by Jean-Charles Andrieu de Lévis, featuring the book’s translator, Isabelle Chéreau, Mats Jonsson will discuss the creation of his work, the research behind it, and the issues surrounding memory, identity, and the representation of Indigenous peoples in national narratives. The specific translation challenges posed by the book will also be addressed.
