FULU MIZIKI—“the sound of trash cans” in Lingala—is a band formed in the Ngwaka neighborhood, a veritable labyrinth of streets in Kinshasa, the capital of the DRC. They describe themselves as an Eco-Friendly-Afro-Futuristic-Punk collective straight out of a future where humans have reconciled with the earth and with themselves. They produce a new style of music they call Twerkanda—a kind of explosive Afro-disco-house/post-soukous—composed entirely of instruments made from materials they have recycled and assembled themselves. For several years, its members have spent a great deal of time conceptualizing an orchestra made from recycled objects found in trash bins—instruments in constant flux, always in search of new sounds. Crafting their own instruments, performance costumes, and masks is central to their approach. Their unique sound carries a pan-African message of artistic liberation and peace, along with a critical perspective on the ecological situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and around the world. For the collective, everything can be salvaged and reimagined.
