Choisir et fonder disrupts traditional images of the family by centering its focus on shared emotional experiences. Chosen and built families are a constellation of different people bound by kinship, mutual affinity, sensibility, engagement, respect, and love. In this exhibition, works by JJ Levine straddle the line between family archive and politically engaged formal compositions. Levine’s analog photographs act as a record of chosen families formed within the contemporary art world, while revisiting the cis-heteronormative photographic portrait standards of the past centuries. This series feature JJ Levine’s friends photographed in their apartments, sitting in a frontal position, gazing directly at the camera. Their personalized spaces highlight each person’s uniqueness and individuality, while appropriating the classic codes of historical portraiture.
