Galerie Old Chelsea is pleased to present an art show inspired by the Gatineau Hills by artist Jacqueline Jake Brown, celebrated for her bold use of colour and richly textured modern landscapes. The exhibition invites viewers into a vibrant interpretation of nature, shaped by winter serenity, vivid autumn colour, and the expressive possibilities of acrylic painting.

For nearly 30 years, Brown has drawn inspiration from the Gatineau Hills. Family hikes and ski outings created lasting impressions of the landscape—from the quiet stillness of winter and crisp seasonal light to the sweeping intensity of autumn foliage. These experiences continue to inform the landscapes she creates today.

Texture is central to Brown’s artistic process. Working primarily in acrylic, she uses thickening agents to create substantial, slab-like applications of paint. She then layers these shapes to build the surface and develop each finished composition. As Brown explains: “I like acrylics because the colours stay bright and I use thickening agents to create slab style painting creating the texture that I love. I am an instinctual artist and my tools are shape, colour and overall feeling.”

Through this process, Brown creates paintings that are simultaneously grounded in the Gatineau landscape and distinctly contemporary. Thickly layered surfaces give her landscapes a physical presence, while vibrant colour brings energy and emotion to familiar scenes.

“ A Splash Of Colour” offers viewers an opportunity to experience a landscape not simply as it appears, but as it is remembered and felt: the cool quiet of a winter morning, the brilliance of autumn foliage, the rhythm of hills and trees, and the emotional connection that develops through years of returning to the same place.
