Opening of Fragmentary Epistemologies by Stanley Wany
Friday May 15 at 5 p.m., with the artist and the curator.
L'Imagier invites you to its opening night of Fragmentary Epistemologies by Stanley Wany, curated by François Chalifour.
In Western artistic tradition, the 13th century is marked by a dramatic tone in the depiction of the “Last Judgments,” which is reflected in the very form of the bodies—often angular, compressed, and emaciated. This trend is evident both in the reliefs on church pediments and in the numerous frescoes depicting the fall of damned souls. Stanley Wany, in his graphic work (here, my personal selections), asserts and manifests this visual energy through the intensity and vibrancy of the contours and lighting. He thus establishes, in the eyes of the communities concerned (in this case, people of African descent), a powerful iconography of identity, rooted in a reality (worldview) from which they have long been deprived.
