Book and Album Launch: Lazuli
The Lazuli project is what happens when Nic Laflamme ventures beyond the horizons of QRBP and Les Gouride. Lazuli—a 15-chapter novel and a 15-song album—is Nic LaFlamme’s decision to tell his story through melodies and prose, venturing to share with us fragments of his existence drawn from the tangled web of experiences that have nourished him as time slips away. The Lazuli project stems from that ambiguity where creation and exhibitionism intersect.
.
Lazuli is an autofiction novel that tells the story of Niko Li Lazuli, who reveals to us some of his memories of his father, Victor. Through various scenes set in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region, China, France, Honduras, Cambodia, and Turkey—with stops in Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Italy, and many other places—Niko recounts events that, in each chapter, are linked to a song Victor once composed. Niko describes the origins of the melodies, their purpose, and their roots. Since Victor never wanted to publish his compositions, the book is accompanied by tracks recorded by Niko. Nic Laflamme is both Niko and Victor.
While the novel’s stories take us on a journey to the four corners of the globe, the melodies and arrangements of the songs also transport us along musical paths with unusual resonances. Under the multi-instrumentalist fingers of Nic Laflamme, the piano, mandolins, bouzouki, accordion, guitars, and percussion come alive to sweep us away into a truly unique universe.
The musical component of *Lazuli*, co-produced and mixed by Bruno Rodéo, will come to life in concert and will be presented over six dates from November 14 to December 12. Nic Laflamme will be joined on stage by the talented musicians Bruno Rodéo, François Gaudreault, and Élise Legrand. The evening will feature music and readings of excerpts from the novel.
