Hansom Eli is a Montreal-based duo formed in 2019 by brothers Camille and Alexy Guérer. While Camille mainly writes the lyrics and sings, her brother, a multi-instrumentalist and producer, handles the melodies that go well with his sister's sensibility. Playing with folk, R&B, funk and indie-pop sounds to create their musical signature, the latter comes close to the music of Feist and Christine and The Queens. Born in Ottawa to French-speaking Quebecois parents, the band sings in French as well as English, and sometimes even tries their hand at Spanish. The duo writes by improvising until they find the right words. That's how they came up with their name "Hansom Eli", inspired by the concept of gender binarity. By analyzing the English word handsome, which is normally used for men and never for women, the duo decided to make it gender-neutral and make it their own. Summer and winter alike, Camille and Alexy get around by bike and adopt a lifestyle based on conservation and protection of nature, ecology, healthy eating and so on. These passions and values are reflected in every facet of their lifestyle.
In 2019, the duo release their debut EP Yesterday. The following year, the EP Better Days makes its appearance. Since their debut in 2019, the band has won the PDV grant presented by RBCxMusic and the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television for the video of their song Flow of the River. His song Summer Rise has been chosen by Tourisme Montréal to promote the metropolis in summer 2021. In 2020-2021, the brothers also took part in the monthly webseries STUCK, broadcast and produced by TFO / ONFR+. In short, STUCK offers portraits of artists in the context of the pandemic. TFO / ONFR+ offers a look at current political and cultural events in Ontario. Thanks to the Jeunes Volontaires grant obtained for the creation of 3 dance videos released in summer and fall 2021, Hansom Eli released Mezcal, Uma and Fièvre, excerpts from their recent EP entitled Fièvre at the crossroads of French pop, r&b, funk and Latin acoustic music. Sharing 2 tracks with Montrealers Mike Clay (of Clay & Friends) and Magi Merlin, discovered at Osheaga, Hansom Eli continues to carve out a relevant place in the Canadian musical universe.
