Galerie Old Chelsea is pleased to showcase the captivating works by Lucie Olson in a new exhibition that celebrates the stunning landscapes of Canada. Born in Quebec City and having lived in Alberta and British Columbia, Olson has always been drawn to the natural beauty that Canada offers. Her love for the outdoors led her to settle near Gatineau Park in 2002, a place that has become her constant source of inspiration. With its breathtaking landscapes, Lucie finds herself regularly seeking refuge in the park’s serene environment, a refuge that has shaped her art and deeply influenced her creative journey.

Her connection to nature runs deep, rooted in her youth and her subconscious, which she feels is fundamental to her identity. Lucie’s art has always been a reflection of her deep reverence for the environment and its beauty.

A graduate of the Fine Arts Diploma Program at the Ottawa School of Art in 2022, Lucie’s studies provided her with an opportunity to explore various mediums and artistic styles. Her curiosity eventually led her to the oil and cold wax medium, which allows for a looser, more intuitive approach to painting. Lucie’s work often involves layering colours, then subtracting or scraping away sections to reveal the interplay of hues beneath—a process she compares to a game of hide and seek in which she uncovers a deeper truth in her paintings.

Fascinated by abstraction, Lucie often paints from her imagination, allowing colours and shapes to evolve naturally on the canvas. As she explains, “The evolving scenery changes constantly, like in a meandering dream.” These compositions often morph into recognizable elements of nature—forests, mountains, vegetation, and water—that evoke the very essence of Canada’s stunning landscapes.

The paintings featured in this exhibition will transport visitors to many favourite Canadian scenery all while offering an intimate look at the artist’s evolving, dream-like perspective on the natural world.
